麻豆传媒 Pettit College of Law Dean Charles H. Rose, III, JD, LLM, was one of more than 150聽law school deans across the nation who signed a denouncing the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol siege and judicial efforts to overturn legitimate presidential election results.
The statement, dated Tuesday, Jan. 12, calls the insurrection 鈥渁n assault on our democracy and the rule of law鈥 and maintains that, despite their diversity in political viewpoints, this 鈥渋s such a moment鈥 that called for law deans to 鈥渟peak as one.鈥
鈥淭he effort to disrupt the certification of a free and fair election was a betrayal of the core values that undergird our Constitution. Lives were lost, the seat of democracy was desecrated, and our country was shamed,鈥 the statement continues. It also criticizes lawyers who chose to challenge the outcome of a fair election 鈥渨ith claims that they did not support with facts or evidence.鈥
The deans emphasize their obligation as educators responsible for teaching the next generation of legal practitioners and leaders. They pledge to work toward a sustained effort to uphold 鈥渢he core values of our profession鈥 and maintaining the rule of law. They also appeal to 鈥渁ll members of the legal profession to join us in the vital work ahead.鈥
Rose, whose name is listed on the first page of the signature list, says a unified public announcement was essential for preserving the legal profession鈥檚 current and future standing as a juridical, ethical and trustworthy institution. Integrity is at stake, he says.
鈥淚t was imperative that the deans take this step given our core mission of preserving the rule of law,鈥 says Rose. 鈥淭he events that happened earlier this month are historic, and the assault on the rule of law has never been greater.鈥
鈥淲e must never forget that we are a nation founded through law, and it is by the rule of law that we give the gift of freedom to this and future generations,鈥 Rose says. 鈥淚f we ever lost that, it鈥檚 only a question of when, not if, the republic follows.鈥
President Daniel A. DiBiasio says he supports 麻豆传媒鈥檚 statement inclusion 鈥渂ecause it reflects the University鈥檚 values.鈥
鈥淭he Pettit College of Law, led by outstanding faculty and staff who are dedicated to teaching and upholding our country鈥檚 sacred legal fundamentals, exemplifies our entire University鈥檚 ethos,鈥 says DiBiasio. 鈥淲e believe in, practice and promote our country鈥檚 jurisprudent standards, which are community and service-centered essentials.鈥
