About USM

The University of Southern Maine (USM) is a state-owned institution with campuses in Portland, Gorham and Lewiston in the U.S. state of Maine. It is the southernmost of the University of Maine System. It was established as two distinct state universities, University of Maine at Portland and Gorham Normal School. The two schools were merged in 1970 to help reorganize the public university system in Maine and later on extended by adding the Lewiston campus in 1988.

The Portland Campus is home to the Bio Sciences Research Institute, the Edmund Muskie School of Public Service, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and the Osher Map Library, and the University of Southern Maine School of Business. The Gorham campus, a lot more residential, is home to the School of Music and the School of Education and Human Development. As of 2019, University of Southern Maine had 6,700 undergraduate scholars and 1,500 graduate scholars, with a scholar-faculty ratio of 13:1.

Worth of International Merit Scholarships at University of Southern Maine

The International Merit Scholarships at the University of Southern Maine comprise the following:

  • USM student with a GPA of 2.75-2.99 at $8,000 each year and is obtainable to 1st-year candidates only.
  • Dirigo Scholar with a GPA of 3.0-3.49 at $10,000 each year and is obtainable to 1st-year candidates only.
  • President’s Scholar with a GPA of 3.5 at $12,000 each year and is obtainable to 1st year and transfer candidates.

Note that scholarship awards are renewable (4 years for first-year candidates and 3 years for transfer candidates) given that the beneficiary maintains the specified minimum GPA.

Eligibility for International Merit Scholarships at University of Southern Maine

  • All foreign undergraduate candidates that apply to the University of Southern Maine will automatically be given consideration for the International Merit Scholarships.
  • If the candidate satisfies the academic requirements, they will be granted a merit-based scholarship at the period of admission.
  • This implies that candidates will find out right away if they will get a scholarship award from USM and it also implies that more candidates will receive scholarships.
